Mother-in-law steals back gift she bought with grandson's money, husband protests at not leaving her unsupervised in family home: 'This is a serious boundary issue'

Should somebody have free rein over their belongings just because they gave them to you?

For something that is supposed to be a nice gesture, gift giving can be a practice that comes with a lot of strings attached. Some do it to send a message, or conveniently turn something that was supposed to be a present into a loan. Not everybody gives out gifts simply because it is a nice gesture.

This can be particularly annoying when family members display these kinds of behaviors. More often than not, it is representative of a larger pattern of entitlement that they use to annoy you, or even truly make your life miserable. A simple gift can say a lot about how they feel, and the lore around it even more so.

Most people would agree that once you give someone a present, you are likely not going to be taking it back. This isn't what everybody thinks, though, and some individuals believe that they are allowed to engage in this unorthodox practice just because they are family. When it was something that was technically theirs in the first place, it can feel difficult to establish a boundary. It has to be done nonetheless.

  • In this story, a woman was flabbergasted when her mother-in-law decided to take back a household item that she had gifted them using money her son had given her to buy gifts with her grandsons. Initially unsure of why it went missing, the woman eventually texted her husband's mom and learned that she had taken it back because she didn't think it was getting enough use.

    This was just the latest in a series of incidents where the mother-in-law had disrespected the boundaries of their family home, rearranging things and opening mail without asking.   • kmactane I know it's common in cases like this for people to say "You don't have a MIL problem, you have a husband problem," but in this case, I'm sorry to say you have both a MIL problem (she's a utter horror) and a husband problem (he cares more about her feelings than yours, or about basic sanity and decency).
